War does not only kill soldiers. It steals childhoods and innocent lives.
Each photograph is a life cut short. Each candle is a reminder of a crime that cannot be ignored.
Peaceful Memorial in Oleksandriia
On December 22, a peaceful memorial action took place in the city of Oleksandriia, central Ukraine, to honor the memory of children whose lives were taken by Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine.
The initiative was launched by Oleksandr, a veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Local volunteers, active community members, and representatives of the Oleksandriia City Council joined and supported the event.
150 Faces of Lost Childhood
Photographs of 150 children killed by the war were displayed in the city center. For ethical reasons and out of respect for the families, some faces were partially concealed.
Trench candles were lit beside each portrait, while quiet music played in the background. Residents were invited to stop, reflect, and honor the memory of the children — and to confront the true cost of war for civilians.
The vigil was held in the evening to ensure maximum public visibility.
“With this action, we want to draw attention to the fact that war takes not only the lives of soldiers, but also innocent children. Every photograph here represents a stolen childhood and a reminder of the price of Russia’s aggression,” said Oleksandr, the initiator of the memorial.
Alarming Official Figures
According to official data from Ukrainian juvenile prosecutors and the National Police:
- 676 children have been killed;
- Over 2,303 children have been injured;
- Around 20,000 children were forcibly deported to the Russian Federation.
These figures are not final. Verification is ongoing, particularly in areas of active hostilities and temporarily occupied territories. Children in regions subjected to constant shelling and bombardment are the most affected.
A Call for Global Awareness
This memorial was not only an act of mourning — it was a call for responsibility, remembrance, and truth.
Ukrainian children must never be targets of war.
Their stories demand justice — and the world’s attention.
