Ukrainian agri-company Zakhidnyi Buh has announced a landmark investment of ₴1 billion ($25 million) to build Ukraine’s first specialized durum wheat mill and a modern pasta production facility.
The launch is scheduled for autumn 2025: the pasta factory will start operations in September, followed by the durum mill in October. The first phase will process 80 tonnes of durum wheat and 150 tonnes of soft wheat per day. A second phase will boost capacity by an additional 200 tonnes of durum and 300 tonnes of soft wheat daily.

“We aim to create the ‘second Barilla’ in Ukraine. Our dedicated durum mill will yield up to 72% high-grade semolina, matching world-class pasta standards – an efficiency level unattainable with conventional mills.”
Cutting-edge technology
The company will use Italian pasta production lines — the global industry benchmark — and advanced Turkish milling equipment, which is rapidly closing the gap with leading international manufacturers.
Sourcing strategy: contract farming + own fields
Zakhidnyi Buh will source durum wheat primarily through contract farming in western Ukraine, where climatic conditions favor high-quality yields. By 2027, the company targets 80,000 tonnes from contract growers and 30,000 tonnes from its own farms.
Export-oriented production
Between 60% and 70% of semolina output will be exported to EU markets, including Poland, the Baltic States, and Hungary. The company is also open to private label production for large retail chains.
