The first batch of M1A1 Abrams tanks from Australia has arrived in Ukraine.
The delivery was officially confirmed by the Australian Department of Defence as part of a military assistance package worth approximately $245 million. In total, Australia will provide 49 tanks in response to a direct request from the Ukrainian government.
Most of the tanks have already arrived
According to the ministry, the majority of the tanks are already on Ukrainian soil, while the remaining units are expected to be delivered in the coming months.
“The Abrams tanks will play a vital role in boosting the mobility and firepower of Ukrainian forces fighting against Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion,” said Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles.
Delays overcome – tanks now operational
Although earlier reports from Australian media cited delays due to U.S. approvals and a temporary shutdown of a Polish logistics hub in February 2025, these issues have been resolved, and the tanks are now bolstering Ukraine’s armored capabilities.
More support coming — Wedgetail aircraft on the way
In addition to tanks, Australia plans to deploy an E-7A Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft to Europe in August to strengthen the protection of critical air routes used to deliver aid to Ukraine.
Ongoing training and partnership
Australian military instructors continue to train Ukrainian soldiers as part of the multinational Operation Kudu mission, highlighting the enduring commitment of Canberra to Ukraine’s defense.
“Delivering the Abrams tanks is part of Australia’s unwavering commitment to justice, peace, and upholding the global rules-based order,” emphasized Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy.
