Ukraine Rebuilds Despite War: Residents Returning Home in Zaporizhzhia
The Service for the Restoration and Development of Infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia Region has completed the reconstruction of a multi-storey residential building that was heavily damaged during a Russian missile attack in October 2022.
The five-storey building, located at 80 Nezalezhnoi Ukrainy Street / 3 Yakova Novytskoho Street, suffered catastrophic damage when one entire entrance was destroyed. Two neighboring sections were severely affected, and the blast wave shattered windows throughout all eight building sections.

From Ruins to Recovery
Out of 150 apartments in the building:
- 20 apartments were completely destroyed
- the remaining units sustained varying degrees of damage
Reconstruction began in November 2023. Over the course of the project, builders:
- rebuilt the destroyed sections of the second and third entrances from scratch
- restored and reinforced load-bearing structures
- installed a new insulated roof
- replaced key water supply, sewage, and heating systems
- completed full interior renovations
- improved the surrounding residential area
All works were carried out in line with accessibility and inclusivity standards.
59 Apartments Rebuilt — Families Return Home
In total, 59 apartments were fully rebuilt or renovated.
Soon, 96 residents, including 12 children, will be able to return to their homes.

The building is currently undergoing the final commissioning process before official occupancy resumes.
This project stands as another example of Ukraine’s resilience and determination to rebuild, even amid ongoing attacks — restoring not only infrastructure, but safe homes and communities.
